How In-Home Wound Care Helped One Family Reclaim Precious Time

A Rebirth Advanced Healing patient in Pennsylvania poses with a care provider

Patient Spotlight: Darryl “Woody” Fortney

For more than seven months, Darryl “Woody” Fortney endured the painful aftermath of osteomyelitis, a bone infection that led to a surgical debridement and left him with three chronic wounds on his foot, including one on his big toe.

Despite rounds of care from his foot and ankle surgeon, podiatrist, and home health, the wounds refused to fully heal.

His daughter, a hospice nurse, had been stepping in on weekends to manage his wounds, and doing her best to keep things from worsening.

But the emotional toll was heavy.

“She was doing everything she could as a nurse,” said Sean McCartney, the wound care provider who took over Woody’s treatment. “But she wanted to just be his daughter again — not his caregiver.”

That shift became possible after Woody was referred to Rebirth Advanced Healing. Sean applied grafts to all three wounds during the first visit. The progress was rapid. Within just five treatments, two of the three wounds had completely closed. Even Woody’s follow-up provider confirmed the wounds were healed. No more grafts were necessary.

Only one wound on the bottom of his foot required continued treatment and, so far, has responded beautifully.

Woody’s case stood out not just because of the fast results, but because of the relationship formed during care.

“You can feel it when they talk about Sean,” a team member shared. “There’s trust, connection, and genuine appreciation. These aren’t just appointments — they’re real moments of healing for the whole family.”
